Review of Babylon

The Rooftop on Level 7 of Westfield Sydney is finally open, with Mantle Group Hospitality creating Middle Eastern Restaurant, Babylon and Modern Cantonese Restaurant, Duck & Rice.  The easiest way to reach the rooftop is by taking the express escalators from Pitt Street Mall, or the lift from Castlereagh Street (inside the JP Morgan Building at 85 Castlereagh Street).

Babylon, named after the ancient kingdom, is a sprawling restaurant and bar, catering for a massive 800 people, and it includes an alfresco terrace modelled on the Hanging Gardens of Babylon.  It’s an ambitious concept.

The decor of Babylon is opulent, to say the least.  Archways create dramatic effects while velvet upholstery, marble finishes and timber add to the appeal, with gold accents providing a little extra bling.

The restaurant centres around a mangal (Turkish grill) and 2 rotisseries.  The food menu has been curated by Head Chef Arman Uz and is inspired by his time growing up in Turkey as well as his travels through Israel, Lebanon, Cyprus and Egypt, sampling the local street food.

The share style restaurant menu is simply divided into Flora, Fauna and Ocean.  Highlights include the Hummus with wattleseed dukkah, olive oil and leblebi (with house made bread) and the Slow cooked lamb shoulder with yoghurt, mint, coriander and zhug herb sauce.  A set menu is also offered for groups.

The bar menu is divided into Meze, Gozleme and Wood Fired.  The dishes are naturally perfect to share, or a good option if you’re just looking for a nibble with your beverage of choice.

In terms of the beverages, bar manager David Nutting (ex Hubert and Eau de Vie) has you well looked after with a selection of Middle Eastern inspired cocktails and sommelier Simon Howland (ex Nomad, Catalina) has curated the whisky, spirit and wine list.

I think Babylon is a top spot for a corporate lunch or dinner and a great place for groups.  I also think the Terrace will be especially perfect in Summer!
